Multi-level marketing (MLM) is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of the other salespeople that they recruit. This recruited sales force is referred to as the participant's "downline", and can provide multiple levels of compensation. Other terms for MLM include pyramid selling, network marketing, and referral marketing.

Most commonly, the salespeople are expected to sell products directly to consumers by means of relationship referrals and word of mouth marketing. Some people use direct selling as a synonym for MLM, although MLM is only one type of direct selling, which started centuries ago with peddling.

So, is Network Marketing Good or Bad?

Traditional marketing methods have companies spending millions of dollars each year to market their products and services.

They know that word-of-mouth marketing is a far more powerful and effective method of marketing, especially, when that message comes from those whom we know and trust!

And these companies are more than willing to pay you, to communicate this message to your network of friends and family.

In other words, network marketing companies use their independent distributors in place of paying marketing firms. The distributors introduce the products to consumers and make commission versus the marketing companies making commission.

So, is there bad in this? Nope! It's a complete WIN-WIN all around. The product is being introduced by a distributor who is allowed to work without punching a time clock.

Why Doesn't Everyone Do Network Marketing Since It's So Simple?

If you want to call your own shots in life, if you’re willing to get the education you will need to run a small business, if you enjoy working with people, then network marketing just might be right kind of business for you.

The thing is, many people just sign up with an MLM because their sister-in-law or "friend of a friend" TOLD them it was a reputable company. Or because the ad TOLD them they would make big money overnight. These are not good reasons for joining a network marketing company! There should be research and footwork involved before signing anything.

Did you know that many MLM's that have been in the business for years and years may not be the best companies to join? "Why?" you ask? Many of these companies have outdated pay plans, bad reputations, or a myriad of other problems you may not want to get involved with. Of course, if you find one that fulfills all of your requirements - Fantastic! Just don't assume that because they have been around that they are reputable - many are not, unfortunately. The effort involved may seem overwhelming at first, but the following should help you find the right MLM to join...

Just like any business you would start, you need to have the emotional connection with the product or service. You must believe in the foundation of the business and the products. Do your research! You would run out and get a business license to start a heating and cooling business or a hair salon without knowing and liking the business, right? So do the same when looking for a work from home opportunity.

Don't look for a "get rich quick" scheme, it will just land you back at square one. Look for a company that has a reputable history, solid financial strength, an honest product and YES a  good compensation plan is a must too! Can't work for pennies, right!
